Description
Sarajevo is the capital and the biggest town of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city is famous for its traditional cultural and religious diversity with adherents of Islam, Catholicism, Judaism, and Orthodoxy coexisting there for centuries.
Sarajevo developed mostly during the Ottoman Empire and during Austrian monarchy. The murder of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914 is considered the beginning of the First World War and with it the beginning of recent history. Between 1992 and 1996 the city suffered the longest siege of a city in the history of modern warfare (1425 days long) during the Bosnian war. Today Sarajevo is one of the fastest developing cities in the region which still weaves the tradition with the modern.
